DomuS3D integrates one of the most widely used and highest performing professional rendering engines in the world, V-Ray by Chaos Group, which allows users to generate high-quality photorealistic renderings in a short time. Similarly, users can easily generate 360 panorama images or VR images for Virtual Reality headsets.
Rendering is a computer process that generates an image, of 3D visual representation, from a computer design. The computer generated image contains a series of information about the scene such as shapes, viewpoints, optical characteristics, lighting, and more.
The rendering engine in DomuS3D, in other words, is like a camera that takes a photo from within the room scene that we've built and designed in the software.

GPU/CPU ENGINE: AUTOMATIC SETTING
An important change introduced with the update of the rendering engine in DomuS3D 2022 is the setting of the automatic selection to use GPU or CPU for rendering processing.
The program is now able to identify the type of graphics card installed on the computer: if there is a latest-generation NVIDIA card (GeForce RTX), it will use GPU (graphics card processor) to process the rendering, which is generally faster and higher performing than using CPU.
The results achieved with the two processing methods may differ slightly since the algorithms employed and optimized for the specific hardware vary.
It may occur, albeit on rare occasions, that the rendering processed by GPU can be affected by problems that derive from the settings of specific materials used within the scene. Therefore, it is important to know how to override DomuS3D’s automatic selection and force rendering processing by CPU, if necessary, in certain cases. This is true both for renderings conducted within DomuS3D and for those conducted in Render Manager, the stand-alone application for processing renderings.
There are two possibilities to force CPU processing for rendering:
- Force processing for the current project only;
- Set CPU processing as standard for all projects.
How to force CPU processing for the current project only:
Once you click the “start rendering” button, the rendering window will appear. You must open the hidden section of the window by clicking on the arrow symbol (“>”) that appears on the right side of the window. Scrolling to the bottom of the available options in this section, you’ll reach the “GPU Rendering” section: to force CPU processing, uncheck the “on” box.
At this point, whether the rendering is processed within DomuS3D or within Render Manager (exporting the job using the appropriate button in the bottom left), the processing will be executed using CPU. This selection is saved in the local memory of the current project.
How to set CPU processing in Options (standard for all projects):
It is also possible to set a standard mode for all renderings from the Options window. In the “Navigation and Rendering” tab of the Options window, under the “Rendering” section, there is field titled “GPU for hybrid rendering”. The options for this field are:
- Automatic: this is the default mode where the program will automatically select either GPU or CPU (renderings will be processed with GPU if the graphics card is sufficient and of the latest generation NVIDIA RTX, otherwise CPU will be used);
- None: this choice will force processing with CPU;
- Nvidia CUDA: algorithm that can be used with older generation NVIDIA graphics cards (non RTX);
- Nvidia OPTIX: optimized algorithm for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.
Thanks to the integration of V-Ray6.1, it is possible to create V-Ray materials using new and higher-performing parameters.
V-Ray materials in DomuS3D are classified as "VRayMtl". If you want to learn how to add a new material to DomuS3D: click here.
