Sometimes you need to render a scene from outside the room. In this case you usually hide the wall, and also hide the wall-mounted items (such as sanitary ware) as you don’t want to see from their back side. But this way you miss their reflection in case there are glasses or glossy materials in the scene.
A solution now available is to flag those items as Ghost items (also called Visible To Camera in third party software such as 3dstudio-max); you can set this flag in the Property Grid of the element.
The next images show you the result you will get enabling the Visible To Camera flag.
All elements are visible
Wall-mounted elements have been flagged as Visible To Camera
As you can see in the second image, ghost elements can still be seen over reflective surfaces, such as tiles and shower box. Ghost elements keep on generating their shadow, too.
If you are using mental ray® you can ghost both objects and furnishings, while in V-Ray® just furnishing can be ghosted.
